The approach taken by the Université de Lorraine to opening up the source code of software developed by its  research teams is part of an international context, particularly in Europe as part of Horizon Europe, and a national context, particularly as part of the work of the “Source code and software” group of the French National Committee for Open Science, as well as the French government’s recent determination to identify and promote software developed by its research teams.

Over and above these external factors, it is up to the Université de Lorraine to determine, within the framework of its autonomy as a public research establishment, the policy it wishes to pursue in this area and the way in which it will be implemented. In May 2023, the Université de Lorraine’s “Open Science” Steering Committee entrusted an Operational Committee with the mission of leading the institution’s reflection on this policy and its implementation, integrated at a more global level with UL’s “Open Science” challenge.

As this project gets underway, questions are already emerging:

  • What is the current state of research software source code openness at our institution?
  • What tools contribute to this, with what functionalities, limitations and opportunities?
  • How does this approach fit in with UL’s commercialization policy?
  • How can we do more to find levers and partnerships to promote our production ?

New content will be added to the Code and Software pages as the project progresses.
